My Favorite Piece of Technology

 

The Headphones

Headphones are my favorite technological device because they accompany me and give me the chance to be in my own space, even when I'm surrounded by noise and people, such as when I'm on the subway. Imagine any given morning on public transport in Santiago, where we are reduced to hating each other, pushing each other, and squeezing in. The faces of almost everyone we see are contorted, asleep, or almost waiting to snarl at you for whatever reason. I'm a part of it, but while listening to "Mr. Blue Sky," how bad can life be? I can even learn to love the jerk who stands at the door without letting people in.

I cannot imagine my life without music, and headphones provide me with the opportunity to never be without it. Music is almost the only activity that I truly enjoy, as I can freely choose what I listen to and discover a new world every day through a simple song. If you are still not wearing headphones, I must tell you that I admire you and, at the same time, I am concerned about how you are able to endure reality so directly.
